trash pickup - take two

I'm not sure why my whole message wasn't published. I am not a blogger, and my patience with this is wearing thin at the moment. But here is the info. (again)

Waste Management Systems of Bennington is our trash removal co. They currently offer mixed paper and cardboard recycling - they are "working on" aluminum and plastics. No time frame was available on that.

For their "starter package" (my name, not theirs) for this service, the info is as follows:

mixed paper/cardboard pickup
every other week
2-yard dumpster
$60/mo. - not incl. fees and taxes

My thoughts are: 1 - where would we put another dumpster? 2 - do we go through enough paper to fill a small dumpster in two weeks? 3 - did we decide Dian Magnuson was already doing this?

sorry for the delay - Barb was on vacation and just got back to me. She is copying the back utility bills for us.

Recycling Containers

After giving the recycling containers some more thought and a bit of research, I was able to find this website (we actually get the catalog too). http://www.uline.com/Product/AdvSearchResult.aspx?keywords=recyling%20containers
I like the idea of the Rubbermaid Slim Jim with the different lids. They have different shaped openings and are color coded. This may be what we have for the slim trash cans already at church, with the swinging lids. Not sure though, need to check it out on Sunday. I like the blue containers with the recycling logo on them for our purposes.

I know we talked about three containers (paper, cans, plastic) in various locations, but I think we could combine cans and plastic into one.
Get two containers (1 for paper, 1 for cans/plastic bottles) in the following:
hallway outside kitchen -no extra one needed right by pop machine
cave
range
entrance
welcome center
lounge

use existing container for paper in narthex

For the kitchen get the totes, one each for glass, plastic, cans. Is a paper one really needed in the kitchen? Maybe there is room for these in the back towards the outside door?

What areas did I forget?

Looks like a large investment of money. There may be less expensive places to get these or similar items. Let us know if anyone finds something.

Recycling Fun Facts

Thanks Erin, for getting the Blog set up.

I have an email out to FirstStar Fiber in Omaha, they are the company our school has helping them with their 'go green' efforts. So, waiting to hear what they have to say.

Here is a link http://members.aol.com/Ramola15/funfacts.html that our school uses to share fun recycling facts on their website. Could be useful in the Loop or Oakin? What do you all think?

Notes from meeting 1

For those of you who were not at the meeting we spent today getting a handle on the task before us. We have big plans but obviously must take it one step at a time. We would like to develop goals for how we can impact our church, community, and world. Much of the discussion today revolved around the implementation of recycling in our church building. Gillie has taken on the task of finding out more about our trash service and if they offer pick up for recyclables. We would also like to begin educating the congregation whether through articles in the oakin or weekly notes in the loop.

Some other future plans/suggestions include:
Mug-raiser
Energy Audit
Getting rid of Styrofoam
Toy library
Bible study about creation care
How do we reduce use of paper, energy, water, and other resources

These are just a few of the suggestions made and we have a big task ahead of us. The hope is that we will be able to use this blog as a meeting site instead of meeting face-to-face so post your ideas and findings and we look forward to moving forward.
